Kia ora, welcome to Youthline Palmerston North!

 

While Youthline Palmerston North is best known for the youth helpline, the organisation is also greatly involved in the development of the community. We get behind young people, their friends and whanau and try our best to reach out by providing other services such as: URGE seminars at schools, presentations, after-school and holiday programmes, face-to-face mentoring and support programs.

 

 

Volunteering in Palmerston North

People who volunteer:
Come from all walks of life,
Are caring, sensitive and non-judgmental,
Care about youth issues,
Do not need previous experience, as full training is provided, and 
Benefit greatly from learning about themselves.

 

 

Training:

Training takes places at least twice a year. On completion of the training a potential volunteer will be able to understand and/or demonstrate:
How Youthline operates
Client centered counselling
Self awareness
Affective communication
How to manage difficult issues
Peer and self assessment
Empathy and rapport building
An ability to encourage disclosure and gather information

PROGRAMMES

What is K-Gas?

K-Gas is an after school programme that provides both physical- and cognitive-based curriculums for 8 to12-year-olds. All sessions are located at the Kelvin Grove Community Hall on Kaimanawa St. These programmes are held from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

 

 

Sports programme

Participants are involved in fun team sports and cognitively challenging games. These sessions allow children the ability to grow in confidence as they are actively encouraged to give all activities ago.

 

 

Considering Kai cooking programme

Participants work in supervised teams of five to eight children. This programme helps to develop: skills in food preparation, measuring ingredients, reading recipes, food value, and basic hygiene. Each session also includes a brief discussion or activity around a life issue, such as self-esteem, disability, bullying, communication, relationships and anger.

 

 

Arts and Crafts programme

This programme holds the philosophy that art should be meaningful for the participant. The participant should be proud of their individual creativity.

 

 

End of term

At the end of term, we invite parents/caregivers of those who participated in the programmes to share a meal with K-Gas leaders. This provides an opportunity to strengthen the link with the children's family and to discuss any issues they might have. We can also provide information and links to agencies that could offer additional or more relevant support.

 

 

Holiday programme

Holiday programmes are held twice or three times a year. These programmes include rotating activities held at the Kelvin Grove Community Hall, outdoor recreation, and one-day recreational trips.

Kelvin Grove youth worker

The Kelvin Grove youth worker is based at the Kelvin Grove Community Hall and aims to provide support, direction and work alongside young people. This is done primarily through mentoring and providing youth development programmes.
One on one mentoring
The youth worker provides one on one mentoring for young people that have been identified as needing some extra support.

Youthline works to form and strengthen links with families, local community, schools and other social services.

Kelvin Grove alternative education, Youth One Stop Shop, Highbury Whanau Centre, Cool Kids & Families, Roslyn School, Milson School, Freyberg High School, Kelvin Grove Neighborhood Watch, Te Wananga O Aotearoa, Te Manawa Science Centre.
