AN ICONIC COMMUNITY HUB FOR MANUKAU

Youthline has been given a 30 year lease of the once iconic Papatoetoe Fire Station. The building is in a prime location on St Georges Street, and is easily accessible to young people, their families and the wider Manukau community.

Lease Signing Ceremony for the Papatoetoe Fire Station

Honorable Len Brown signed the lease of the Old Papatoetoe Fire Station over to Youthline on the 10th June 2009, with Minister Paula Bennett in attendance.

Over the past 2 years Youthline has undertaken extensive research projects within the Manukau Community and has engaged with other key stakeholders including young people, volunteers, funding partners, local residents, community groups, health professionals, cultural leaders and council.

Youthline’s services operate in response to a community need. Manukau has considerable assets and a richly diverse community that has the potential for a strong economic future. Alongside these attributes are challenges and pressures associated with such a fast growing environment.

Recent Youth research by the Counties Manukau District Health Board and The Ministry of Youth Development shows that:

42% of Manukau's population are aged under 25 and 49% of people in the Manukau area live in one of the most deprived areas of New Zealand
Almost half of Manukau Schools either do not have a nurse or the nurse does not receive any professional supervision
At least 500 young people in the Manukau area are not enrolled in any form of schooling or formal education system
Suicide and motor vehicle related deaths are the leading causes of death in the 12-24 age group in Manukau, accounting for more than 40% of all youth deaths in New Zealand
A large number of Manukau youth sited gang problems, violence, and drug and alcohol problems as key issues they face in the area

The inclusion of the Papatoetoe Volunteer Fire Brigade Old Boys Association and a wide range of other community groups within this building, significantly increases the value of this project to the wider community for generations to come.

The wider community will relish seeing new life being breathed back into this iconic facility.
